Problems we fix · Pump not working

Hot tub pump not working?

When the pump won't turn on at all, power isn't getting to or through the motor — usually a dead start or run capacitor, a failed relay on the control board, or a burned-out motor. We isolate which and fix it same-day.

What's actually happening

Silence means the power chain is broken somewhere

A pump that does absolutely nothing — no hum, no movement, no jets — has lost its supply of working power somewhere between the control board and the motor windings. This is different from a pump that hums but won't spin: here the motor isn't even trying. The job is to follow the power from the board out to the motor and find where it stops.

A surprisingly common cause is a dead capacitor. Spa motors use a start (and sometimes run) capacitor to get turning and stay efficient; when one fails completely the motor may not energize at all. Just as common is a failed relay on the control board — the board switches the pump on through a relay, and a burnt or stuck-open relay simply never sends power, even though the rest of the system seems healthy.

The most serious cause is a burned-out motor: windings that have shorted or gone open after water intrusion or years of heat. That's the difference between a modest repair and a pump replacement, which is exactly why we test rather than assume. We check for voltage at the pump, the capacitor's condition, and the relay's switching before condemning the motor — so you only pay for the part that actually failed.

Capacitor, relay or motor?

We'll confirm which for $69 — credited to the repair

A few clues lean one way; we verify with meters on site.

Likely a capacitor or relay if…

  • Other pumps and the panel work normally
  • It died suddenly with no noise or smell beforehand
  • Only this one pump output is dead
  • Tapping or power-cycling occasionally wakes it

Likely the motor if…

  • There was a burning smell or a breaker trip
  • The motor ran hot or noisy before it quit
  • You've seen water or rust at the wet end
  • It got power confirmed but still won't run
How we fix it

Trace the power, find the dead part, restore the pump

1

Test power

We confirm whether voltage is reaching the pump and whether the board's relay is actually switching it on.

2

Flat quote

Once we know it's the capacitor, the relay or the motor, you get the published price up front — diagnostic credited.

3

Repair

We replace a failed capacitor or relay, or fit the correct replacement pump if the motor has burned out.

4

Verify

We confirm the pump starts on command, runs quietly, and moves full flow before we leave.

Most pump repairs are completed same-day across Palm Beach County.

Capacitors hold a charge — leave the wiring to a tech

A start capacitor can store a painful jolt even after the power's off, and spa pump wiring sits inches from water under NEC 680 rules. If your pump is dead, switch it off at the breaker and let a licensed tech open it up — we discharge and test safely so a cheap part doesn't become an injury.

Common questions

Answers before you call

If the pump is completely silent, working power isn't reaching the motor. The usual causes are a dead start or run capacitor, a failed relay on the control board that never sends power, or a burned-out motor with shorted windings.

No. Often it's a failed capacitor or a board relay — both far cheaper than a new pump. We confirm voltage and test those first, and only recommend a replacement pump if the motor itself has burned out.

We don't recommend it. Start capacitors hold a charge even with the power off, and spa pump wiring sits close to water under strict code. Switch it off at the breaker and let a licensed tech discharge and test it safely.

A capacitor or relay sits at the lower end; a burned-out motor means a replacement pump from $239 for a wet-end repair up to a jet pump replacement. You get the flat price before we start.
